Honduras Swears in U.S.-Endorsed Conservative President

(MENAFN) Honduras inaugurated its US-endorsed conservative president Tuesday amid a constitutional crisis that cast doubt on the legitimacy of his electoral win and President Donald Trump's intervention.

Nasry "Tito" Asfura, 67, commenced his four-year presidential term spanning 2026-2030 at the National Congress, where a sparse crowd witnessed Congressional leader Tomas Zambrano administer the oath and drape the presidential sash across his shoulders.

"We have to get to work with humility. Time has started to run, and we have to solve people's problems in order to serve them," Asfura said in his first speech as president.

The Tegucigalpa ceremony unfolded without customary international dignitaries, notably absent were heads of state from neighboring Guatemala and El Salvador.

Asfura's inaugural address centered on domestic policy priorities—particularly public safety, social programs, and educational reform—announcing that 10 million textbooks had been distributed to elementary students.

The electoral turmoil preceding Tuesday's swearing-in fractured the nation between Asfura loyalists and opposition forces alleging systemic corruption and manipulation.

The governing Libre party flatly rejected the vote count, publicly branding it electoral fraud, rejecting Asfura's victory, and condemning Trump's support as interference.

During the ceremony, Asfura appealed for national reconciliation. "Hondurans want peace and prosperity, and that is what we are going to focus on. A divided family does not move forward, and Honduras is a great family that must be respected and work together for its future," he said.

Prior to his inauguration, Asfura had already established diplomatic footholds through trips to the US, meeting senior officials, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and to Israel, meeting Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Asfura assumes power confronting deep political divisions while pledging to prioritize economic stabilization and crime reduction.
